Candidate Engineer Resource
A plain-language guide to what ECSA candidate registration actually involves: the 11 competency outcomes every category is assessed against, the Degree of Responsibility scale, and how the process is structured. Written for candidates working toward Pr Eng, Pr Tech Eng, Pr Techni Eng, or Pr Cert Eng.
This page is educational content, not official ECSA guidance. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or a substitute for the Engineering Council of South Africa. Always confirm current requirements at ecsa.co.za.
Every ECSA registration category is assessed against the same 11 outcomes; only the complexity level differs: "complex" engineering problems for Pr Eng, "broadly defined" for Pr Tech Eng and Pr Cert Eng, and "well-defined" for Pr Techni Eng. A candidate needs to demonstrate evidence against all 11, grouped into four themes.
Each piece of evidence a candidate logs is also classified by how much responsibility they held for that specific piece of work, on an A-E scale: from closely supervised (A) to full independent accountability (E). ECSA looks for a progression across a candidacy, not uniformly high DoR from day one.
Evidence is also tagged as either a Complex Engineering Problem (CEP), something analysed, diagnosed, and solved, or a Complex Engineering Activity (CEA), the broader work of managing, communicating, or executing engineering work. A well-rounded portfolio has a mix of both, not just problem-solving evidence.
Registration submissions typically bundle: a Training & Experience Report (a detailed, per-outcome account of your work), a Training & Experience Summary (a condensed cover sheet), an Engineering Report (a project-narrative report demonstrating applied competency), and a referee's assessment. Building these from scratch at submission time, instead of logging evidence as it happens, is where most candidates lose months.
GEC built a tracking tool that follows this exact structure: log dated evidence against these 11 outcomes as you go, get a milestone timeline built around your own registration pace, and generate your Training & Experience Report, Summary, and Engineering Report automatically from what you've logged. Free to try with one category; full access is R49/month, billed annually (R588/year).
